Morocco was a country that completely changed the way I look at travel. It wasn’t just the landscapes that made it unforgettable — it was the people, the culture, and the moments that reminded me how much beauty exists outside of what I know.
I spent two nights in Marrakech before and after my desert adventure, using it as the starting point for one of the most incredible experiences of my life: a four-day tour into the Sahara Desert. Along the way, we stopped in local villages, drove through landscapes that felt untouched by time, and experienced pieces of Moroccan life that I never could have found by simply visiting the main cities.
One of my favorite discoveries was amlou, a traditional Moroccan spread made from roasted almonds, argan oil, and honey. It is often compared to a Moroccan version of peanut butter, but the flavor is completely its own — rich, nutty, slightly sweet, and absolutely amazing. I tried it during our journey and instantly understood why it is such a loved part of Moroccan culture.
What stood out to me most about Morocco was the kindness of the people. Before this trip, I knew the United States could sometimes have a complicated reputation around the world, so I didn’t know exactly what to expect when people asked where I was from. response stayed with me. He smiled and said, “We welcome you here in Morocco. We are happy to have you.”
That simple sentence meant so much. It reminded me that people are so much more than the countries they come from. Despite anything happening in the world, a stranger was choosing to welcome us with kindness and make us feel at home.
Throughout Morocco, I noticed the warmth and beauty of the people everywhere we went. There were cats and dogs roaming the streets, children playing, and communities filled with life. You could also see that many people lived with much less than what I was used to. But what struck me was not what they lacked — it was the sense of community, hospitality, and happiness that existed despite it.
The journey into the desert was something I will never forget. For nearly 10 hours, we drove through what felt like the middle of nowhere. As far as I could see, there was only endless dirt and open land. Every once in a while, we would pass small wooden houses or simple shacks with tiny gardens growing beside them. What amazed me even more was seeing soccer goals scattered throughout these remote villages — sometimes sitting in the middle of what looked like nothing but sand and dirt. Seeing kids have a place to play and communities come together through something as universal as soccer felt like something straight out of a movie. It was a reminder that joy, connection, and passion exist everywhere, even in the most unexpected corners of the world.
When we finally arrived in the desert, it felt like stepping into another universe. We slept in tents surrounded by endless sand dunes, with nothing but the stars above us. That night, everyone gathered together around a fire while local guides played drums and traditional instruments. People danced, laughed, and shared a moment together despite coming from different countries and backgrounds.
The next morning, we woke up at 4:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise over the desert. Sitting quietly as the sun slowly appeared over the dunes was one of the most peaceful moments I have ever experienced. There was no noise, no distractions, and no rush — just endless sand, golden light, and complete silence.
Morocco reminded me why I travel. Not just to see beautiful places, but to challenge my perspective, learn from people who live differently than I do, and realize how much the world has to offer beyond my own experiences. From the colorful streets of Marrakech to the quiet emptiness of the Sahara, Morocco is a country filled with beauty, resilience, and unforgettable memories.
