Malaysia
Malaysia was my final stop in Southeast Asia on my first backpacking trip before flying back to the United States, and it was the perfect way to end such an unforgettable adventure.
I spent my time in Kuala Lumpur, a city that felt like a beautiful mix of modern skyscrapers, different cultures, and incredible food. After weeks of traveling through more rural areas of Southeast Asia, arriving in Kuala Lumpur felt like stepping into a completely different world. The city was lively, colorful, and full of energy.
One thing I appreciated about Malaysia was experiencing a culture different from my own. Because of the country’s large Muslim population, modest clothing is much more common and socially expected. I made sure to be respectful and cover up more while exploring the city, and it was a great reminder that traveling means adapting to and learning from the cultures around you.
Kuala Lumpur was the only place during my Southeast Asia trip where I felt slightly uneasy walking alone at night. Like any major city, it had areas where I was more aware of my surroundings, but during the day I felt completely comfortable exploring and taking in everything the city had to offer.
One of the highlights of Malaysia was getting to reconnect with a friend I met while traveling through Vietnam. She is originally from Egypt but now lives and works in Malaysia, and she showed me a side of the city I never would have experienced on my own. She took me to an Arabic restaurant, and it was genuinely some of the best food I have ever had. Sharing that meal with someone I met on the other side of the world was such a special reminder of how travel creates connections you never expect.
The food scene in Kuala Lumpur was incredible. With so many different cultures coming together, there were endless options to try, from Malaysian cuisine to Middle Eastern food and everything in between. Every meal felt like another opportunity to experience the diversity of the city.
One of my favorite memories was seeing people dancing and celebrating together in the streets. There was so much life and happiness around me — strangers coming together, sharing music, and enjoying the moment. It was such a beautiful representation of the diversity and energy that makes Kuala Lumpur unique.
Although Malaysia was only a short stop before heading home, it left me wanting to come back and explore more. It was the perfect final chapter to my Southeast Asia journey — a place filled with culture, connection, and memories I will always carry with me.
